General News of Wednesday, 11 September 2019
The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has stated categorically that President Akufo Addo’s led administration, NPP are complicit and cannot be trusted to resolve issues regarding the PDS agreement.
The outspoken General Secretary who was addressing the media at NDC party headquarters in Accra on September 10 against the backdrop of President Akufo-Addo’s speech delivered on Monday at the Bar Conference held in Takoradi said, the NDC is aware of frantic efforts by the Akufo-Addo-led government to bring another company called EDF, a French energy firm to take over the operations of ECG in pursuit of his ongoing state capture agenda.
Asiedu Nketia who warned Akufo Addo to come clear of any allegations leveled against him said “We are aware of frantic efforts by President Akufo-Addo to bring in EDF of France to take-over the assets of ECG in pursuit of his ongoing state-capture agenda,”
“We hereby serve notice to the Akufo-Addo government, that any attempt to use this scandal as an avenue to appropriate the assets of ECG for cronies and assigns of President Akufo-Addo will be fiercely resisted by the people of Ghana,” the General Secretary added.
General Mosquito, reacting to claims that the NDC contacted the United States of America (USA) government to conduct a thorough forensic audit into claims of fraud regarding its contract of Power Distribution Services (PDS) said that “Many people were asking if we no longer independent, why we have called the United States to do investigate the scandal. The US brought the money to us and the money was contributed by their taxpayers. See how difficult it is when we are paying taxes, after paying these taxes in this difficult situation, from the petroleum taxes and say we are going to support Togo with it and you hear that Togo is doing “lovi lovi” with that money wouldn’t you be interested in investigating it? “This is why Minority decided to bring in the US government to help us unwrap this loot,” He added.
PDS has been under investigations for alleged fraudulent conduct leading to the takeover of the assets of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
A statement issued by the Minister of Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, on Tuesday, 30 July 2019, announced the suspension of the concession agreement and explained that the decision followed the “detection of fundamental and material breaches of PDS’s obligation in the provision of Payment Securities (Demand Guarantees) for the transaction which was discovered upon further due diligence”.
However, FTI Consulting, a United States-based consulting firm commissioned by the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) is investigating whether or not PDS duly won the contract to manage the assets of the ECG confirmed that insurance guarantees were, indeed, paid to back the PDS’s takeover of the assets and operations of the ECG
