New boxing gym for Bukom

President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday disclosed that construction of a new boxing gym near the Korley Lagoon in Accra was in progress and would be inaugurated later in the year.

He said the construction of the gym, which was sponsored by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), was aimed at giving hope to the people of Bukom in the Greater Accra Region, the hub of boxing.

The President made the announcement yesterday at the Parliament House when he delivered the State of the Nation address.

He also mentioned that plans had been concluded for the construction of a Sports Stadium at New Edubiase in the Ashanti Region.

The President has also tasked the Sports Ministry to liaise with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to discuss ways of making Physical Education a major part of the school curriculum activities.

The lack of attention to sports, he stressed, had led to the costly upsurge in obesity among pupils and students alike. He called for urgent reintroduction of PE in both practical and theoretical forms.
