AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited has appointed Mr Eric Asubonteng as the General Manager and Managing Director of its Obuasi Mine.
A statement from the mining company said Mr Asubonteng had worked with AngloGold Ashanti since 2013 and had risen through the ranks by dint of hard work and strong commitment to duty to reach his current position.
He takes over from Mark Morcombe, former Senior Vice President and Managing Director of AGA Ghana who leaves the company after several years of dedicated service.
Until this appointment, Mr Asubonteng was the Head of Operations and Corporate Affairs of the Company’s Obuasi Mine and had full responsibility for managing the reputation of the company.
“Mr Asubonteng is a highly accomplished Finance Executive with 13 years’ experience in executive roles, both local and international, in both surface mining and underground operations,” the statement said.
It added that his experience included financial management roles in the resources sector incorporating responsibility for financial and management accounting, financial management, supply chain, information technology, business operations and restructuring, as well as operational management and corporate affairs.
Mr Asubonteng is a chartered accountant and holds a first degree from the University of Ghana Business School, an MBA from the Manchester Business School, and is currently pursuing a Mining Engineering certificate.
The Executive Vice President (Sustainability) of AngloGold Ashanti, Mr David Noko, said the company was pleased to have Mr Asubonteng preside over the operations of the company’s Obuasi Mine.
“We are convinced that given his very deep insights and experience in the extractive industry and Finance, we have in Mr Asubonteng the right balance required to move the company to the next level,” he said.
Mr Asubonteng expressed delight at the opportunity to serve the company in another capacity, saying he would work with the rest of the team at the Ghana and corporate level, as well as stakeholders at the local and national levels to realise the vision of the company.
