9 THINGS THAT DO NOT NEED TO BE REFRIGERATED

1. HOT SAUCE

With hot sauce it’s the high acid content that makes it hot. That same acid does not make for a very hospitable environment for bacteria, so it can safely be stored in cupboard or pantry where it can remain usable for up to three years.

2. POTATOES

Potatoes won’t last anywhere as long as hot sauce no matter where you store them, but storing them in the fridge actually affects their flavor and should be avoided. Most potatoes should last around three weeks when stored at room temperature.

3. BREAD

The cold air inside the refrigerator will dry bread out pretty quick, so it’s best to just keep enough at room temperature to last you for three or four days and keep the rest in the freezer.

4. ONIONS

Onions do just fine outside the fridge. They sell them in those mesh bags for a reason – allowing air circulation around onions helps them last longer. Keep them stored away from potatoes, however, since they produce gases that promote rot in tomatoes.

5. BATTERIES

No, nobody in their right mind would try to eat a battery, but for some reason some people believe they should be kept in the fridge to make the last longer. Actually, the opposite is true, and the cold will diminish their ability to hold a charge.

6. GARLIC

Like onions, garlic can be stored in the pantry, but should be stored so that air can circulate around it. In most cases, it will last for up to two months.

7. TOMATOES

Tomatoes will taste better if not stored in the refrigerator. And since the tomatoes you get at the supermarket are usually picked well before they are ripe to keep them from spoiling before they reach store shelves, keeping them at room temperature will help them ripen.

8. COFFEE

The pantry is the best place to store coffee as long as it is in a airtight container. Putting it in the fridge or freezer can cause the formation of condensation which can have an adverse effect on the flavor.

9. WINTER SQUASH

There’s really no reason to store squash varieties like acorn, butternut or spaghetti squash in the refrigerator. They will last for a month and maybe a bit more when stored in the pantry.
